Volunteers

The Springfield Library up until March 2009 has been run entirely by volunteers.  At that point a Head Librarian has been hired to point the library into the right direction under The Public Libraries Act.

Since the Librarians hours and duties are separated, volunteers are still needed.  Here are a few roles and responsibilities available to aspiring volunteers.

Library Duties

Basic library circulation.  Responsibilities include check in/out materials; put books on shelves, holds, Inter-library loans and fines.

Library Tours

The Librarian will have tours of the library for interested groups (schools, daycares, organizations, etc...)  During this extra volunteers are need to direct groups through the library.  Responsibilities would include keeping people together, answering questions and handing out information.

Programming

There are several levels of programming that the library is open to.  Regular, drop in and seasonal programming allow flexible hours, timeline and topics.  Most programming is on a volunteer basis while some may be covered with grants with funding criteria (e.g. Bright Beginnings, literacy for Life, Hometown Green Team, etc).

Required Training

All volunteers will require training for tours, computers systems and most programming.  It is on the job training for the most part.  Someone will guide through casually.

There is some training all volunteers have to take.  This training is provided by library and computer professionals that the library will pay for.  Volunteers must attend.

Special Training

Some literacy and parent-child programming has grants available.  Grants couldcover supplies, program materials, snack for participates, honourariums, etc.
